Learn. Netflix Before Bed Harms Your Sleep

According to Amerisleep, streaming TV and movies could be contributing to America’s sleeping problems.

This assertion was made by the mattress company in its recent deep dive into 1,300 Americans’ sleeping habits. The goal of this study was to determine how many Americans are getting their recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night (hint: not many) and what we can do for our Zzzs.

Participants were asked questions about everything, from where they live (Coloradans seem to sleep well), to what they do before bed.. These answers were compiled by researchers who then created some snazzy graphs that highlighted the differences between good and bad sleepers.

One of the most telling examples is the one that shows respondents’ favorite bedtime activities, or the activities between falling asleep and getting up.

The graphic shows that the top three bedtime habits are watching TV, checking Facebook, and streaming videos from the phone. These activities are found high up on the Y axis. This means that they are the preferred habits for people who believe they would benefit from more sleep.

According to the study, most Americans reported that it took them 31 minutes to fall asleep. However, some habits are more likely to prolong this time than others. Digital activities such as watching TV and videos on smartphones, had a negative impact on how easy it was for Americans to fall asleep.

According to the Amerisleep survey, Netflix is the main culprit behind these sleepless nights. The data shows that Americans who regularly used Netflix before bed fell asleep 26 more minutes on average than those who didn’t use the service. Research suggests that sleepers stayed up late on average three nights per week because of this extra time.

Netflix is a popular streaming service that has influenced the sleep of many. 46% admitted to losing their sleep due to the addictive nature of their series, while 25% claimed they are forced to watch it even when they don’t want.

The flip side was that people who did nothing before bed reported the best sleep. There is no reading, meditating or journaling. Just a glass of water and flicking the light switch to get you into the night. Researchers also found that early birds, which were defined as those who rise early and go to bed early in the afternoon, got a lot of Zzzs. They felt more productive and creative throughout the day.

Conclusion? Conclusion?
