Losing Sleep Might Make It Harder To Lose Body Fat

Don’t be deceived, exercise and healthy eating are not the only things that can help you lose extra weight. According to a new study, people may have difficulty losing body fat if they don’t get enough sleep.

There were 36 participants in the study, all of them overweight or obese with a BMI of 2540. Researchers asked 15 participants to reduce calories by consuming only 2943% of the daily caloric intake over eight weeks. The 21 other participants had to limit calories and sleep. They had to cut down their TIB (time spent in bed between lights on and off) by 90 minutes for five days. They were allowed to sleep as much as they wanted for the two remaining days.

Researchers have discovered a link between sleep deprivation, difficulty losing body weight, and other factors. This new research supports that argument and makes the case for sleep’s importance in our overall health. This is not the first study to make such conclusions, but it could be the most comprehensive. The study’s conclusion was written by the researchers:

This study was the longest of all studies that examined the effects of hypocaloric diets on weight loss.

A unique aspect of the study was that participants could still sleep as much or little as they liked for two days. This gave them the chance to get more sleep and possibly catch up. Many did indeed sleep more on these days. However, scientists discovered that even catching up on their sleep didn’t negate the five-day sleep restriction. This hindered their ability lose body fat.

Kristen Knutson is a sleep researcher at Northwestern University Feinberg Medical School in Chicago. She supports this idea. People who want to lose weight and fat, in particular, should avoid sleeping loss during the week. Weekend sleep can’t be made up. Note: She wasn’t part of the study.

You can’t just focus on the hours you spend in bed if you want to get a good night’s sleep. You must also ensure that you get a good night’s sleep. It could be anything, from creating a routine at night (don’t scroll Instagram before bed!) to having the right lighting. This could include having the right light bulbs nearby or sleeping on the best mattress to support your body type.
