If You Snooze, You Win. Harvard Requires Freshmen To Sleep 257 Cm

Before the first day of school, Harvards Class 2022 had to complete an online course about sleep before they could start classes.

The learning tool, appropriately titled Sleep 101 is part of the larger Sleep Matters Initiative at Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. It aims to raise awareness about the health effects of sleep and to teach college students how to make their slumbers work for them.

The interactive class is a 45-minute video. It covers topics such as how to live a balanced life while still getting enough sleep, how one can optimize their schedule to maximize grades, and how many cups of caffeine are too much. The video was shown to all incoming freshmen before they arrived on campus. This ensured that they would be equipped with the necessary tools to get good sleep and prepare for the school year ahead.

Raymond So, a 21-year-old student, spearheaded the initiative along with Dr. Charles Czeisler. He completed his final project which involved a survey to determine how noise in dormitories affected student sleep quality. He discovered that his classmates had suffered from sleep disruption and applied for a grant to help them.

SLEEP 101: THE STATS

This course is not surprising , considering the college years are known for their all-nighters and heavy caffeine reliance. College students average between 6-6.9 hours sleep each night. Many report falling asleep in class at least once every three to four months.

Research shows that good sleep can lead to higher scores on memory and motor skill tests. Even a short nap can help with decision making, concentration, creativity, and decision making. These are important benefits for everyone, but particularly for students who are still learning and working under strict schedules. The debate has been sparked by the question of restructuring school start times. Some researchers believe this could help boost the U.S.

However, Arianna Huffington, the spokeswoman for Sleep 101, leaves an important message in her informational video. This could pique more people’s interest – students and not.
